Kyle with Barack Obama's Grandmother's Cousin

Yes, our dear family friend, Gramma Ruth, is Barack Obama's grandmother's cousin. Ruth grew up in Kansas and there raised her family and our longtime friend Nancy of "Nancy and Dorian Harewood" fame. Our family has spent countless occasions with Gramma Ruth and N & D and their beautiful children Olivia and John. Nancy, Dorian, Olivia, and John campaigned in Iowa and Nevada for Barack, and continue in California. Gramma Ruth taught piano to Miranda and Kyle and many Eagle Rock children and still teaches. As Kyle and Miranda never new their grandparents, Gramma Ruth holds a special place in our hearts.

NPR had an interview with one of Obama's grandmother's cousins this morning.

Was that Ruth???

I heard the same interview and had the same thought, but I believe it was someone else. My dad's still doing research, but the Dunham's have proved very difficult to trace.

Kyle, looks so beautiful and peaceful here, not at all like someone who dislikes having his picture taken. I know he was very, very fond of Grandma Ruth and I can see that in his expression, in this photo.

I am wondering if this picture was last Easter? If so, I remember seeing him that day before I went to work. It was a last minute invite and he was delighted. I was so impressed with his genuine desire to go to see Nancy & D's family. I have always had to drag my child unwillingly to holiday dinners. Kyle loved family so much and the Harewoods couldn't be a more loving family.

No, the NPR interview was not with Ruth. Ruth has been remarried, but I believe McCurry is the family name that connects them to Barack.

I found Nancy on a wonderful Utube site of pro-Obama video clips. here is the link: http://www.youbama.com/popular/4/

Look for "Nancy's Voice" and you will see our dear friend, Ruth's daughter, telling about her Nevada caucus experience. She is standing next to Dorian, her husband. Dorian sang at Kyle's burial and at his memorial.

Sallie, thanks for that memory. You are right: he embraced family and good friends with true heart, one of the things I loved most about him. And we had a lovely time with the Harewoods last Easter, a memory I will always treasure.

NPR's interview was with Ruth's sister Margaret.

Here is another interview with her talking about her and Ruth's paternal grandparents. They were also the maternal grandparents of Madelyn "Toot" Dunham.
